Nous in Greek Philosophy means mind or intellect, the first and purest emanation of the One, regarded as the self-contemplating order of the universe. It is ability of intellectual apprehension and of intuitive thought.

In the Timaeus Plato explains the formation of the universe and its impressive order and beauty. The universe is the product of rational, purposive, and beneficent agency. It is the creation of a divine Craftsman (“Demiurge,” dêmiourgos,) who, imitating an unchanging and eternal model, imposes mathematical order on a preexistent chaos to generate the organized universe (kosmos). For Plato this arrangement is the outcome of the thoughtful intent of Intellect (nous), anthropomorphically represented by the figure of the Craftsman who plans and constructs a world that is as excellent as its nature permits it to be”.
